Blog Post 1 GRBcelL BioPrinter

Last week, I arrived back in Williamsburg to begin work on the GRB celL Bioprinter along with my brother Douglas. On the first day, we worked out a plan for the first five weeks and begun preliminary designs. The project can be broken into several steps: For the first week, training is a priority especially for CAM softwares that will allow machines such as the TORMACH and Lathe. For the second week (or the third week), the main gantry frame was to be assembled. For the third week, the micro pipette/syringe holder alongside any modifications will be designed, prototyped, and finished. For the fourth week, the general G-Code system for pipetting will be written and tested. For the fifth week, the thermal enclosure will be finished. This plan left two weeks (at minimum) to correct the errors that will doubtlessly crop up and do test prints on the bioprinter. Working together with other 3D-printer based teams over the summer, the first week was spent finalizing orders and working on general tools and saftey for the weeks to come. We spent Tuesday working on Fusion 360, a 3D modeling and CAM software, and familiarizing ourselves with the general procedure of modeling and creating tools to be cut out later in the week. On Wednesday, the team was trained with the TORMACH, a CAD drilling machine, to create tool parts. We additionally began to draft up a design for a syringe holder that can hold syringes of multiple sizes utilizing a fixed central axis (image is provided of the initial draft). On Thursday, we used the lathe to cut out pawns from a tube of bullet proof glass. Throughout the week, I created fusion 360 model (with movable parts) of the syringe holder and general bioprinter build, and images are attached. On Friday, the first parts arrived for the bioprinter build, and, over the weekend and next week, I am excited to begin construction!
