Final Update

Overall, I feel that my summer research project went well. There were definite hurdles at the beginning of the process that caused me to reevaluate the direction of my investigation, but these challenges gave me better insight to the difficulties of conducting research. For my final paper, I conducted an analysis of three films: Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988), Biutiful (2010), and La herida (2013). I found that many of the same stereotypical representations of people with mental illnesses that are present in Hollywood films also exist in Spanish films. The selection of the most interesting or cinematic mental illnesses, such as bipolar disorder in Biutiful (2010), shows that the value of entertainment is more important than the negative influence on the perceptions of the public. For this reason, it is generally more difficult to find films that focus on less entertaining but more common illnesses, such as depression or anxiety.

Hi there! Loved the topic you chose for your research project. Do you see any shift in the dynamics of Spanish cinema in terms of better depicting mental illness?
