Music Agnosia

I recognize that the intention of my project was to study perfect pitch and precision, but I’ve stumbled upon something so interesting I just had to make a short post about it – it’s a disorder called music agnosia.

Music agnosia is an auditory perceptual disorder that renders one unable to recognize pitch (or even music in general in the most extreme cases). These cases leave one able to identify language as well as environmental sounds, but individuals are largely unable to identify that pitch exists – music can indeed be selectively impaired. This disorder can be attributed to a failure to encode melodic information properly, preventing a musical line from being stored appropriately in the brain.

Can you imagine having agnosia? I am terrified to think of being able to hear but not being able to hear music – it’s like something from a science fiction movie!
